Prologue
In the ancient lands of the Levant, where the sun cast its golden hue over rolling hills and fertile valleys, a kingdom unparalleled in wealth and splendor thrived under the rule of a legendary king. This was the realm of Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon), a monarch endowed by Allah with wisdom, authority, and dominion over realms seen and unseen. His story, rich with miraculous events and profound lessons, continues to captivate hearts and minds, offering timeless insights into leadership, faith, and the responsible use of divine blessings.
Chapter 1: The Inheritance of a Legacy
Sulaiman was the son of Prophet Dawud (David), inheriting not only his father's throne but also his legacy of prophethood and devotion to Allah. From a young age, Sulaiman exhibited remarkable intelligence and insight. His ability to understand the subtleties of complex matters became evident in an incident that would mark the beginning of his illustrious journey.
Two men came to Prophet Dawud seeking judgment. One owned a field, and the other's sheep had strayed into it at night, grazing upon the crops and causing significant damage. Dawud decreed that the owner of the field would take the sheep as compensation. Observing the situation, young Sulaiman respectfully offered an alternative.
He suggested, "Father, perhaps the owner of the sheep could tend to the damaged field until it is restored to its former state, while the owner of the field could benefit from the sheep's milk and wool during this time."
Dawud recognized the wisdom in his son's proposal and accepted it, setting a precedent for fair and thoughtful judgment. This incident was a testament to Sulaiman's innate wisdom and his capacity for just leadership.
Chapter 2: Gifts Beyond Measure
As Sulaiman grew, Allah bestowed upon him extraordinary gifts. He was granted understanding of the speech of birds and animals, a favor that filled him with gratitude and humility.
One morning, he addressed his people, saying, "We have been taught the language of birds, and we have been given abundance in all things. Truly, this is a clear favor from Allah."
Moreover, Allah gave him command over the winds, which carried him swiftly to distant lands, and authority over the jinn—beings created from smokeless fire. These creatures, invisible to ordinary humans, could perform tasks of immense strength and skill. Sulaiman's dominion over them was a unique blessing, serving as both an honor and a test of his character.
Chapter 3: The Majestic Army
Sulaiman assembled an extraordinary army comprising men, jinn, and birds. Each division had its role, and together, they symbolized the unity and strength of his kingdom.
One day, as Sulaiman inspected his troops, he noticed the absence of the hoopoe bird, known for its keen sight and intelligence. "Why do I not see the hoopoe?" he questioned. "Is he among the absent? I will surely punish him unless he brings me a clear reason."
Soon after, the hoopoe arrived, flapping its wings in haste. "I have discovered something unknown to you," it reported. "I come from Sheba with important news. I found there a woman ruling over them, gifted with everything, and she has a magnificent throne. However, her people worship the sun instead of Allah."
Intrigued by this revelation, Sulaiman decided to take action.
Chapter 4: The Letter to Queen Bilqis
Determined to invite the people of Sheba to the worship of Allah, Sulaiman composed a letter to their queen, Bilqis. He entrusted the hoopoe with delivering the message.
"Take this letter of mine," he instructed, "and deliver it to them. Then step back and observe their response."
The hoopoe soared across deserts and mountains, eventually reaching the splendid palace of Sheba. Dropping the letter before Queen Bilqis, it awaited her reaction.
She read the message aloud to her advisors: "Indeed, it is from Sulaiman, and it reads: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Do not exalt yourselves against me but come to me in submission to Allah.'"
Pondering the letter, Bilqis turned to her counselors. "Advise me in this matter," she said. "I do not decide anything without your input."
They replied, "We are strong and capable of great might, but the decision rests with you. Consider what you will command."
Chapter 5: A Diplomatic Approach
Preferring peace over conflict, Bilqis decided to send a gift to Sulaiman, hoping to ascertain his intentions. She thought, "I will send him a present and see what the messengers return with."
When the envoys arrived bearing lavish gifts, Sulaiman was unimpressed. He said, "Do you offer me wealth? What Allah has given me is far superior to what He has given you. You rejoice in your gift, but I find no pleasure in it."
He sent the envoys back with a stern message: "Return to them, for we will come to them with forces they cannot withstand, and we will expel them from their land humbled and disgraced."
Sulaiman's objective was not conquest but guiding them to the truth. He sought to demonstrate the power and blessings of Allah to inspire them towards monotheism.
Chapter 6: The Throne's Miraculous Arrival
Before Bilqis could arrive, Sulaiman wished to make a profound impression. Turning to his assembly, he asked, "Which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me in submission?"
A powerful jinn responded, "I can bring it to you before you rise from your seat."
But one who had knowledge of the Scripture said, "I can bring it to you in the blink of an eye."
Suddenly, the magnificent throne of Bilqis appeared before Sulaiman. Astonished by the swift arrival, he exclaimed, "This is by the grace of my Lord, to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful. Whoever is grateful, his gratitude is for his own benefit."
He then ordered the throne to be disguised slightly to test whether Bilqis would recognize it.
Chapter 7: The Queen's Arrival
When Queen Bilqis arrived, she was received with honor. Sulaiman pointed to the altered throne and asked, "Is your throne like this?"
She examined it closely. "It appears to be the same," she replied thoughtfully. "We were given knowledge before this, and we have submitted to Allah."
Sulaiman then invited her to enter his palace. As she approached the grand hall, she perceived what seemed to be a pool of water covering the floor. Thinking it was water, she lifted her garments to wade through.
He gently informed her, "It is merely a floor made of smooth glass."
Surprised by the ingenuity and magnificence, Bilqis realized the depth of Sulaiman's wisdom and the power of his Lord. She declared, "My Lord, I have indeed wronged myself. Now, I submit with Sulaiman to Allah, the Lord of all worlds."
Her acceptance of monotheism marked a significant triumph of faith and understanding.
Chapter 8: Unity and Prosperity
With Bilqis embracing Islam, an alliance formed between her kingdom and Sulaiman's. Together, they fostered an era of peace, prosperity, and mutual respect. Sulaiman continued to rule with justice and wisdom, ensuring that the laws of Allah were upheld.
He utilized his gifts to benefit his people, engaging the jinn in constructing magnificent structures, such as the grand mosque in Jerusalem, known as Al-Aqsa. The jinn crafted statues, large basins, and towering edifices, showcasing architectural brilliance.
Throughout his reign, Sulaiman remained humble, often reflecting, "This is from the bounty of my Lord, to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful."
Chapter 9: Trials and Humility
Despite his immense power, Sulaiman faced trials that reminded him of human vulnerability. One such test involved a lifeless body placed upon his throne, symbolizing a period of illness or personal loss.
Realizing this was a trial from Allah, he turned in earnest supplication, "My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom that will not be attained by anyone after me. Indeed, You are the Bestower."
Allah accepted his prayer, reinforcing his dominion and demonstrating that all authority and blessings come from the Divine.
Chapter 10: The Lessons of the Ants
One day, as Sulaiman and his army marched through a valley, he overheard an ant warning its fellow ants, "O ants, enter your dwellings lest Sulaiman and his soldiers crush you unknowingly."
Amused and touched by the ant's concern, Sulaiman smiled and said, "My Lord, inspire me to be thankful for the favors You have bestowed upon me and my parents, and to do righteous deeds that please You. Admit me by Your mercy among Your righteous servants."
This incident reflects Sulaiman's ability to understand the speech of animals and his compassion towards all creatures, regardless of their size.
Chapter 11: The Death of Sulaiman
As the end of his earthly life approached, Sulaiman continued to oversee his kingdom diligently. He stood in worship, leaning on his staff, while the jinn labored before him, unaware of his condition.
Allah decreed that his death would remain concealed from the jinn to teach them a lesson. It was only when a termite gnawed through his staff that his body collapsed, revealing his passing.
The jinn realized that had they known the unseen, they would not have remained in toil, thinking Sulaiman was still observing them. This event highlighted that knowledge of the unseen belongs only to Allah.
Chapter 12: Legacy of Wisdom and Justice
Prophet Sulaiman's reign was marked by unparalleled wisdom, justice, and devotion to Allah. His ability to govern a vast kingdom, manage diverse subjects, and maintain humility serves as a model for leadership.
He utilized his gifts not for personal gain but to uphold justice, spread the message of monotheism, and improve the lives of his people. His interactions with creatures great and small illustrate his respect for all of Allah's creation.
